The Fantail Trust has taken off in quite unexpected ways. We are well on the way and many more traps have been ordered and will be deployed within the next few days. I also saw quite a few fantails on my daily round of trap inspection. The highlight of this last week was that I caught a stoat! They are by far the meanest and vicious critters around and very bad for our birds. They are also very hard to catch. I must say that in some ways it is a dilemma for me to kill such a beautiful animal for no other reason than that it does what it is meant to do. They are quite common in Switzerland but there they exist in balance with other predators and the birds are a bit harder to catch. So for the good of our native birds the stoats have to go and the possums and the rats. Happy trapping!
